VALE - TED BILLSON

Ted was born in 1929 and passed away last Friday at the age of 89.  He was educated at Melbourne Grammar and Melbourne University where he graduated in Architecture in 1956.

In 1970 Ted commenced practice in East Melbourne and his company soon grew from domestic work to large contracts, specialising in racecourse design, from laying tracks to building large grandstands at Mooney Valley, Flemington and many country racetracks. Ted was also a consultant on the Shar Tin Grandstand in Hong Kong. Other developments included the Bentleigh East Medical Centre, and the Southern Peninsula Hospital.

A serious painter for many years, Ted worked in all media from pencil to water colours, pastels and oils, and had a number of successful exhibitions. When I last called to see him a couple of weeks ago, he was sketching a television personality. His room was filled with his paintings. A Google search reveals an on-line exhibition of many of Ted’s fine paintings.

He was keen on billiards and snooker, was a member of the Melbourne and Athenaeum Clubs, and also had a sheep farm at Benalla.

Ted was inducted into the Rotary Club of Melbourne on 10 May 2000, having previously been a member of the Rotary Club of Toorak for two and a half years. He was sponsored by Tony Keep and had the classification of Architecture - General. Ted was a Paul Harris Fellow.

Like many new members, Ted spent a little time considering the options for the various committees available to him. In 2002 he joined the New Members committee, later to become the Membership Involvement committee. He remained on that committee for four years. In 2002 he also joined the Toorak 3 Group – logical since he lived in Toorak! – where he remained an active member for many years.

Ted was also an active member of the Arts committee for several years, the Rotary Foundation committee for three years, and had short-term memberships of the Community Welfare and International Programs committees.

Ted’s deteriorating health in recent times prevented him from attending our weekly meetings as often as he would have liked.

Ted is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Margaret; and was father and father-in-law to Claire, Jessica, Katie, Susan, Edward, James, Richard and Terrence; and grandfather to ten grandchildren.
