IAN CHARLES ROSS, Inducted 24 October 1973
Dr Ian Ross was inducted in October 1973 with the Classification Medicine: Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
Born in Melbourne in 1933 he was educated at Ivanhoe State, Northcote High and Scotch College followed by his MB BS from Melbourne University. After post-graduate work at the Royal Melbourne and Royal Womens Hospitals, followed by three years in English hospitals, he returned to take his Masters in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He has served on the University Faculty of Medicine, on the Committee of the Royal College of Gynaecology & Obstetrics and on the Boards of St Andrews and the Royal Womens' Hospitals.
In the 1970s Ian studied in Scotland the new science of the ultra sound and returned to set up the first ultra sound clinic at the Womens. He has been honoured with fellowships of both the London and Australian Colleges of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He has served on the Medical Ethics Committee at the Womens, as Chief of the Medical staff, and was for years Senior Consultant at the Women’s.
Ian has been involved with Club Committees for many years. Fellowship, Club Procedure, Club Service, International Service, Youth Service have benefited from his efforts, often as Chairman. He has been Chairman of his Group and he has served as a Director on the Board in 1978-80 and again in 1994-96. Ian currently manages the Photography Team in the Club.
During the 1993 World Convention Ian organised and staffed the emergency medical centre. Perhaps he will again in 2023.
Ian probably had no option but to be an involved Rotarian given that he was Sir John Reid’s son-in-law, but we are grateful for that as we have valued his “Never Say No” approach, his friendly charm and his dedication. Ian was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow by the RCM in 2002.
Ian and Margaret have been married for more than 60 years and have four grown children. They are great supporters of the Rotary District Conferences and of the Club organised Onto Conferences. In 2009 Margaret was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Club for Service to the Community.
