He received a Churchill Fellowship in 1973 and a Masters Law Degree (Conflict Resolution) at Latrobe University in 2008. Tony’s career started as an undergraduate clerk in the Commonwealth Public Service followed by 17 years in the New South Wales Public Service during which time he held the positions of Special Adviser to NSW Attorney General and Assistant Commissioner of Corporate Affairs NSW. He moved to Melbourne in 1980 as a foundation commissioner of a new National Companies and Securities Commission where he also served as a part time member of the National Company Law Reform Committee.
In 1987, Tony entered private law practice with Blake & Riggall, now Ashurst, advising on mergers and
acquisitions, corporate law, corporate governance, response to regulation and strategic policy. He retired as a
partner in 2004 and continued with the firm as a consultant until 2016. Also, in 1987, he received an award from
the Australian Shareholders’ Association for promotion of the interests of shareholders.
In 1992 and 1998 he was a Consultant to the Government of the People’s Republic of China on development of securities regulation.
Tony has provided Honorary Governance over a long period to the Anglican Church, serving on many of its Boards and Trusts. He has been a member of the National Board of the Salvation Army Employment Plus and a member of the Audit and Risk Management Committee of Victoria University.
Tony and his wife Wendy have two sons and have lived in North Fitzroy for over thirty years. Inducted into the Rotary Club of Melbourne on 12 May 2010, Tony has been Chair of the Governance Committee and a member of the Audit and Risk Committee for several years, Minutes Secretary to the Board 2011-12 to 2013-14 and a Second Bite Volunteer. He is an active member of Central 1 Group.
In 2012, Tony received the Club’s Axle Award for his significant contributions to the Club in relation to its Rules and Constitution and its Governance. He redrafted the entire constitution and incorporated the changes required by Rotary International to permit Corporate Membership. Subsequently, he led the process of updating the Trust Deeds of the Club’s Community Foundation and Community Foundation Extension Fund, and the merging of the Stolfa Charitable Trust into the Extension Fund.
He has also been engaged in keeping the Club Rules and governance policies up to date and ensuring their compatibility with District and Rotary International requirements. Tony was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow by the Club in 2015 and by The Rotary Foundation in 2017-18.
Our club appealed the decision of the State Revenue Office to impose stamp duty on the purchase of our new office at 15 Collins Street in September 2015. The appeal process required a huge amount of work over some three years by several people in particular, each of whom was very generous with their time and resources.
One such was Tony Greenwood, who acted pro bono in his role as Solicitor for the Club, attended efficiently to all procedural matters and made certain that we complied with all time limits and requirements. For his sustained commitment to Service Above Self it gives me pleasure on behalf of the Board and Members of the Rotary Club of Melbourne to name Tony Greenwood a Paul Harris Fellow with 3 Sapphires.
