PRESIDENT ROBERT INTRODUCES RCM CODE of CONDUCT

"The RCM has a proud history of community service and continues to attract business and community leaders, partner organisations and volunteers to assist with our many projects and activities.

Since the establishment of the Club in 1921, we have been at the forefront of facilitating effective and positive projects, utilizing the well-known and practiced code of conduct - The 4 Way Test. Over the past couple of years we have implemented the Rotary Connects framework which reinforces our approach to project governance and the volunteering experience.

Looking to the future, the Board has determined that the introduction of a dedicated Code of Conduct for the Club is a natural evolution of this leadership and the ideals which we as members have long respected and valued. While we have always adopted and utilized the District 9800 Code of Conduct, as the largest Club attracting 'community and business leaders', a Code of Conduct is also in keeping with community expectations and an important part of creating a vibrant, sustainable and enjoyable Club experience for members and non-members alike.

It gives me great pleasure therefore to advise you that at its February meeting the Board approved a Rotary Club of Melbourne Code of Conduct – a copy of which is on your table. Having our own Code of Conduct also reinforces our commitment to creating a safe environment for all members and non-members in which to pursue the ideals of Rotary when participating in all Rotary organized activities, projects, programs and events.

For a Code of Conduct to be effective and meaningful, it must also have an accompanying procedure or policy on how members or non-members can confidently and confidentiality report any breaches of the Code resulting from a personal experience or observation of inappropriate behavior during Rotary organized activities. I am also therefore launching today a grievance procedure which will be on our website for members or non-members to utilize should they need to. I am confident that this procedure will enable the Board to deal fairly, effectively and efficiently with any complaints or grievance that may arise in the future.

For a Club of such good standing in the community as the Rotary Club of Melbourne undoubtedly is, it is most important that all members and non-members feel safe and comfortable in any environment when participating in Rotary organized activities. That is why these measures are being introduced, and I am sure you will give the Board your full support in implementing them."
