So ahead of time, we advised our intention to Rotary Arran, which is on a beautiful island off the west coast, and where the Fishers and also PE Marion Macleod have close connections. From the website, we learned that their weekly meeting was actually held in the Hotel where we were staying. Easy.
On the designated evening, we dressed up a bit and – bang on time – appeared in the function room where the meeting was to take place. A long table was already set, though we were a tad surprised that there was a baby chair at one end. After a few minutes, we were conscious of being the only people in the room, so started making enquiries.
The first person said they knew nothing about a Lottery Meeting. The second person said they thought Rotary used to meet in the Hotel some years back. The third person said they thought Rotary now met in the next village. Several phone calls later, the Hotel Manager tracked down the person I had originally contacted, who said Rotary Arran now only met four times a year to allocate funds raised through a wishing well appeal, and anyway she was 'rather busy' having dinner.
Nevertheless, she passed me on to her husband who, it turned out, is someone with whom I grew up in my home town ………
The wheel of Rotary spins around in many different directions."
