SALLY CAPP - OUR LORD MAYOR

Sally Capp delivered her annual ‘State of the City’ address in fine style and accoladed the work that Rotary does in the community.

Her up-date on the projects she identified twelve months ago included:

  • the social housing initiatives with surrounding Councils in renovating existing public building stock,
  • the support programs for the growing number of homeless on the streets and the need to think boldly about how to manage traffic within the City, especially through traffic before we are gridlocked.
  • work being done to give back space to the foot traffic for the vast numbers of pedestrians competing for street space every day.

Sally spoke of the terrorism that had hit our streets and specifically referred to the Bourke Street tragedy a year ago that claimed the life of Pellegrini’s Sisto Malaspina and how she dealt with the aftermath a few days later when she was presenting to the visiting Bid Selection Panel evaluating Melbourne as the host city for the 2023 International Convention.

With a great deal at stake, Sally told us that she altered her pitch to talk of how proud she was of all the responders, the public in Bourke Street at the time, then the Police, ambulance and emergency services.

Sally said she felt that with this approach the Panel members gained an insight into the true Melbourne and as it eventuated, they selected Melbourne over London to her relief and delight.

In thanking our Honorary Member and Lord Mayor, President Kevin acknowledged our on-going collaboration with her Council and wished her well for the year to come. And to keep Sally on her ‘toes’, she was presented with R100 socks!
