REFLECTION for LAST WEEK'S MEETING

Rotary Melbourne Reflection – 1 April 2020

"The inspiration for my reflection today comes from news hot off the press from the champion of our SecondBite volunteering – Bob Glindemann. He advises that collections from Prahran Market by Rotary Melbourne members will cease as of this week.

This will come as a huge disappointment to the many of us who have been engaging in this activity for a long time – up to more than 15 years in some cases.

However, as with so many aspects of the current global crisis, there is a silver lining. Arrangements are being made for a number of otherwise unemployed State Government employees to take our place until the “new abnormal” come around, and they will be paid under some of the State and Federal government initiatives. So – at a time when the continuing flow of food from SecondBite to those in need is all the more vital – a way has been found that will both keep the faith with our market traders and give hope to those in need.

As Hugh Bucknall puts it: “This is a wonderful example of innovative thinking where a new class of beneficiaries will keep their jobs, those in peril will get a lifeline, and those who are in danger will live for another day!”

For the great work of Rotary, and the friendships we enjoy through it, we give thanks."  Robert Fisher
