REFLECTION from PHIL CORNISH

Reflection by Phil Cornish

"Near the top end of Collins Street next to the Parliament is a small triangle park called the Gordon Reserve. And in those happier times that will come, we will be able to meander through the parks of Melbourne and take in their history.

The reserve is named for Adam Lindsay Gordon and there is statue of him on Spring St. And chiseled into the sandstone underneath is a line from his most famous poem.

His most popular line “Life is mostly froth and bubble” in shortened form was still used as rhyming slang in suburban cricket when I played after your side lost a couple of quick wickets.

But the whole stanza is:

“Life is mostly froth and bubble,
Two things stand like stone.
Kindness in another's trouble,
Courage in your own.”

In these strange times we find ourselves in, much of what we used to consider more important must surely now be thought of as more froth and bubble. In these times I hope we can still be kind for other’s trouble and may we have courage in our own.

Those workers at the front line of the pandemic must surely be exhibiting both kindness and courage and for these characteristics I give thanks."
