"The involvement of Rotary Melbourne members and friends in collecting from Prahran and Victoria markets has been almost as long as SecondBite has been in existence.
When the Club first became involved, we sought volunteers from the Club for the couple of hours needed each weekend at both locations. We got more than enough to establish rosters so that members were rostered on about once each month.
Right now we still have many of those original members still involved – that is well over ten years of contributing to the market collections. In addition to the Rotary Club of Melbourne members, we have two other Rotary organisations involved in the Prahran collections.
The visibility of the SecondBite activity at the markets certainly provides the opportunity to spread the word.
Each year we have had Year 12 students join the roster when they have a term or two of community service to deliver and this is very well received. We have many instances of market shoppers asking the volunteers what SecondBite is all about. We have also had several decide to join in with the Rotarians on the roster – a great result.
These activities all help promote what SecondBite is all about as well as save good food from ending up in landfill."
