I learned the importance and strength of networking. Not only was I able to meet amazing Rotarians through the vast network I developed, but also a broader sense and appreciation for how like-minded people with a vision can make a difference in the world.
I built courage. It was courageous of me to disembark on a solo journey throughout various parts of Australia. Now I know that I can do many things on my own in my own country.
I advanced my writing and speaking skills. The dozen 2,500 page research papers required for my degree forced me to improve my writing profiency. Speaking to clubs and audiences was sometimes nerve-racking, but over time and with practice, I was able to do it with ease and with a greater confidence.
This led me to approach Hugh Bucknall regarding being added to the bid for MC for the RI Convention in 2023. I don't have a big name in the world of Rotary so I fear I may be overlooked.
I developed a greater appreciation for nature, culture, and history. I could point out species of Australian trees, animals, and flowers while walking through the bush. I read extensively on the history of Aboriginals and wished I had met one to experience a true yarn. This lead to my love of going to the history museums in every city to learn about the development of the nation.
The things I miss most: the smell of gum trees, the song of a kookaburra, kangaroos jumping, baby joeys clinging onto mama koalas, a proper sticky chia tea, the magic of going to the footy and having no idea what the hell is going on, parallel parking on the other side of the road, listening to cricket commentators, suntanning in Edinburgh Gardens, having the ability to order a pot or a schooner or a pint without someone questioning just how much beer I wanted to consume with my parma, pubs with fireplaces, wearing a fascinator without looking stupid (Ha!, only during derby season), learning and belting out You're the Voice, and about a million more. I really miss it all!"
We miss you too Katie. You left your mark on so many Members of Rotary, people you met and animals you touched!
