The project was initiated by the four city Centenary Clubs in Australia and New Zealand – ourselves, Sydney, Auckland and Wellington. We plan to immunise 100,000 children in 9 Pacific Island countries with three vaccines and establish a sustainable vaccination program into the future.
Implementation has started. It is a 3 to 4-year project with a total budget of US$ 3.9M. The first year has been fully funded – US$ 1.3M. This has materialized through the collective efforts of most Rotary Districts across the two countries, many Rotary Clubs and individual Rotarians. The Rotary Foundation has supported the project with the approval of no fewer than nine Global Grants covering the first year of the project, one for each country.
With a total value of USD 1.3M raised so far and a further 18 Global Grants planned for the second and third years, this will be one the biggest (if not the biggest after polio) project supported by the Rotary Foundation. We are really proud to have UNICEF as our partner. They have the necessary expertise for the introduction of immunization programs such as this. There is also a long history of UNICEF and Rotary working closely together, particularly on the polio eradication campaign.
It is terrific to know that work is underway ‘on the ground’ despite all the challenges of the current environment, and to have certainty that, once the initial immunizations are undertaken in each of the nine Pacific countries, their own governments will continue to protect their nations’ children from these diseases into the future.
Each of the four Clubs is committed to raising A$50,000 per annum across three years. We are only about half way there, so we do need ongoing financial help from you, our members, and your networks.
Please consider doing two things:
(1) Go to the Rotary Give Every Child a Future website for guidance on making your donation (https://everychildafuture.com/). Please remember – it has been calculated that every A$45 you give will protect one child.
(2) If you have any contacts in the philanthropic or corporate fields that might be interested in supporting us, please send them the attached flyer.
