Rotary Melbourne Reflection PP Robert Fisher – 2 December 2020

From the earliest days of our organisation, Rotarians wanted to promote high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world’s most widely quoted statements of business ethics is our own Four-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor, who later served as R I President.

He produced the 24-word test when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. It became the guide for his sales, production and advertising people to follow in their relations with dealers and customers alike, indeed the survival of the company has been credited to the adoption of this simple philosophy:

  • Is it the TRUTH?
  • Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  • Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  • Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

In these challenging times, and in this year of celebration and opportunity, we would do well to reflect afresh on this Four-Way Test. After all, each one of us, as a new Rotarian, signed up to it!

For the great work of Rotary, and the friendships we enjoy through it, we give thanks.

Robert Fisher
