PETER HOLLINGWORTH

Rotary Reflection - 25 November 2020 - Peter Hollingworth

It was an important meeting where people came with different and conflicting viewpoints on matters of deep concern. From the beginning the Chair bade them to ‘speak the truth in love’. Sound advice indeed, though this can be the hardest thing to do, especially when it is not clear what the whole truth of the matter is. In these times of complexity this is so often the case.

Where the various factors causing discord are hard to untangle, or critical facts hard to establish, our egos can be threatened. But when competing priorities are put in their proper place, truths can then be spoken to each other, in a way that it can be received without loss of face or dignity. Then the chances of coming together in mutual acceptance, in common cause, will allow forms of love to shine through pain and conflict.

When this happens, human conflict can be transformed by the greater good. For such outcomes we offer grateful thanks for the small triumphs of love.
