The following is the latest news around Melbourne Indigenous Transition School, which Rotary Melbourne respects and supports:
"In 2022, MITS will open a new Boarding House for our alumni on Richmond Hill. This new 40-bed Boarding House will enable our MITS alumni boys – from Year 8 onwards – to attend our great Partner Schools across Melbourne each day, then return to a warm and culturally celebratory MITS-run boarding house each evening. You can learn more about the new boarding house here.
We are thrilled to be able to provide this living experience to our alumni boys, which is already available to our alumni girls through our two houses on Richmond Hill and in Kew. Once this new boarding house is complete, MITS will have the capacity to provide accommodation for up to 86 Year 7 and alumni students – a strong, connected community of young Indigenous people coming together on Wurundjeri Country from across Victoria and the Northern Territory.
This continued growth responds to consistent feedback from our students’ families and communities, who have expressed their desire for their young people to access the great educational opportunities of Melbourne while being surrounded by their Indigenous peers and supported by MITS people each night. It also reflects the success of our existing alumni boarding houses over the past two years.
This development has been made possible through a $10 million capital grant from the Australian Government, announced today by Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, Minister for Indigenous Australians Ken Wyatt and Senator Jane Hume.
As always, we will be relying on the generosity of our MITS community to support the everyday essentials of running this home-away-from-home. Donations from our community continue to account for 50% of our operational funding needs. If you would like to support our students’ educational journeys in Melbourne, please visit our website here.
This new boarding house further fulfills our enduring commitment to our MITS students long after they graduate from our Year 7 program. We are excited to work with our students, their families and communities as they pursue their educational ambitions in Melbourne.
Thank you for your continuing support of MITS and of our young people.
Best wishes
Ed
