DID YOU KNOW ...?

Many would have known each other through their independent schools and University and would meet each other over lunch or billiards at the Australian, Melbourne, Athenaeum, or Naval and Military Clubs.

Tate, Monash and Sewell were members of the Beef Steak Club, a dining club that met monthly. Osborne and Monash belonged to the Wallaby Club, a walking club of professors, journalists, naturalists, and Scouters.

Some were members of the Freemasons. Rotary and the Freemasons might well have competed for members from among the leaders of business and the professions. Freemasonry was, of course, very different. It was not a service organisation and its members were reticent about the nature of the organisation, keeping this private to their own members.
