Message from President Reg

The continuing Covid lockdown in Victoria has meant that it will be necessary yet again to switch to an on-line meeting.  Initially District governor, Dale Hoy was scheduled to visit and address this week’s regular Club meeting on District 9800 plans and opportunities for Rotary Melbourne.  This annual event provides the opportunity for a conversation between our Board and the District leadership team.   We have agreed with Dale that it would be best to defer this event until we are able return to in-person meetings.

So, I am very grateful to Stephen Rando, a senior Project Leader and technologist at ANZ, who has kindly agreed to attend our virtual meeting this coming Wednesday 18 August.  He will address and share insights on emerging technologies on what future banking and financial services will look like.  Make sure you register … details are below in this Bulletin.

Evening Meeting:  11 August.  Jo Murphy (yes, I am proud to say he is my Son-in-law) gave us a lively presentation on the writing and production of TV series, Younger and Emily in Paris.   More than 80 people participated in this meeting and they weren’t disappointed.  You can view the video shortly on the Rotary Melbourne website.  I was particularly delighted with the advice Joe was able to give several emerging writers on the journey to mainstream TV writing.  Congratulations to Yidan Xi and George Giamadakis for your work in leading the evening meetings team.

Up coming meetings:  At the meeting on 25 August we will be featuring members and their projects.  Front and centre will be the launch of our annual Smith Family Around the Bay fundraiser.  Let’s keep our fingers crossed we’ll be back at the Sofitel to learn more about the work of the Smith Family and inspect our heroic cycling team who will be participating on 3 October.   If you want to volunteer for one of the many roles available that day, contact Jim Orchard, Trevor Nink or Chris Wang.

A meeting not to miss will be our meeting on 1 September, where author and journalist Gideon Haigh will address us on his latest book:  ‘The Brilliant Boy, Doc Evatt and the Great Australian Dissent’.
