Last week's meeting 1 September

When introducing Gideon Haigh as guest speaker at our weekly meeting on 1 September, to Rotary Melbourne members, Tony Greenwood spoke of Gideon’s talent spotting revealing and unusual characters and events in historical situations.  Gideon’s address quickly demonstrated this, focussing on the story of the tragic drowning of Max Chester, a 7-year-old, in the open waters of a flooded trench which is fully described in his latest book: The Brilliant Boy: Doc Evatt and the Great Australian Dissent.

This story vividly demonstrated how in his High Court dissent judgement on the case between Max Chester’s mother and the municipality of Waverley, Doc Evatt was able to establish good law based on his empathy for the traumatised Mrs Chester.  Gideon engaged members and guests highly effectively.
