Vocational Service has been a key pillar of the Rotary Club of Melbourne since its inception 100 years ago and the presentation of our Annual Vocational Service award today acknowledges the outstanding contribution of an individual to our community through their profession.
It is worthy to reflect on the “The Classification System” that was adopted by our founders in 1921 as a guide to inviting Members to join our Club , ensuring a broad cross section of professions, fields and vocations were represented.
The full list of 38 Charter Members who met at Scott’s Hotel makes interesting reading and comprised CEO’s from the corporate and business sector, medical, legal and engineering professionals, senior public servants, education, pastoralists and the US Consul General.
The past membership classification was adopted in 1930 enabling continuity in membership from various vocational disciplines.
This diversity of membership has ensured the ongoing success of our Vocational Service Committees and we as a Club can be very proud of the extraordinary contributions and community service projects we continue to initiate and support.
It is important that our membership continues to remain relevant and reflects the changing nature of work, vocations and social demands both locally and internationally in our society.
All of us should think outside the square and make a very real effort to maintain diversity in our Club and seriously consider people they could propose for membership.
