Native bee species as endangered following the 2019—2020 bushfires.

This article by Simon Mulvany is very topical in terms of a pollinator corridor pathway project running from Westgate Park to the Botanic gardens to increase the bee population in urban Melbourne that our Rotary District is promoting in partnership with Emma Cutting’s Heart Gardening Project and the Wheen Bee Foundation. This project was promoted at Saturday morning’s Morning Tea with the DG, it has been promoted at a Club meeting and will be promoted on Tuesday morning to the Corporate Members meeting.

There are (or were) about 2,000 native bee species in Australia, how many there are now after the bushfires is a good question. Bees are the most important pollinators of our fruits and vegetables and a number of crops that feed animals and are really important to our ecosystem.

Also, Claire Moore, the recipient of our Rotary Melbourne’s inaugural Environmental Sustainability Award is a beekeeper and breeder of hygienic queen bees.
