Next Big Idea Workshop Report

A lively three hour session began with a challenging address by prominent futurist Paul Higgins.

A memorable quote got us thinking about predicting the future :  “Uncertainty is an uncomfortable position.  But certainty is an absurd one."
He spoke of ways of organising to respond to the complexity of the future as it emerges, influenced by multiple factors that combine to make the future unpredictable.  Obvious emerging issues and technologies include climate change, evolving new energy sources, evolving modes of transportation, robotics, work organisation and bio-technology.
In a world where the future is defined by the complex interaction of many such factors, organisational models that are driven from the perspective of the customer or recipient of service, work more effectively than top down control from the CEO/Board.  In provision of services local agency and control is vital.  In this sense Rotary is well equipped with diverse resources and perspectives in clubs across the globe. Networking of organisation units must be formed and promote collaboration.
In looking to the future, Paul wondered whether significant inequality emerging within societies might be the result of innovative technologies only being available to people with the cash to invest in them.  This issue had perhaps been heightened by the Covid Pandemic.
The key themes from the work and thinking of the 21 people present related to:
  • Addressing inequality, particularly following the Covid outbreak;
  • The need to open up Rotary’s culture and leadership;
  • Focusing on projects with measurable impact; and
  • Climate change and the Indo-Pacific
Four working groups have been created and are working on specific project ideas that emerged from discussion groups on these themes.
A final report of the workshop will be finalised for the Board meeting on 20 November - these ideas will be taken by their champions to the Think Tank for further development, or to relevant committees.  The report will be available for sharing with Rotary Melbourne members.
President Reg thanks all 21 participants for giving 3-hours of the time for a productive session.  Also special thanks to Richard Dent for facilitating the workshop and the 3 room hosts, Carol Bond, Cameron Glover and Chris Sotiropoulos. The output will be vital also in the Horizons work president Elect, Bev Brock is leading in preparation for the 2022/23 Rotary year.
