Reflection by Robert Fisher 17 November 2021

Well here we are, at last with fellow Rotarians and guests in person. I suspect we feel that the worst of the pandemic is behind us, yet some of us will be burdened with the opinion that things could have been handled differently or better. Rather, perhaps, we should be grateful for where we have reached overall as a nation.

Our Lord Mayor has been a beacon of hope during the darkest hours of the past two years, and it was a joy to see her raising a glass after midnight when lockdown finally came to an end. Much needs to be done to restore economic activity and health in our city, and we should to be mindful of the role we can play, by:

  • Supporting local traders
  • Looking for opportunities to volunteer in new community projects that are already emerging from our own Committees
  • Helping ensure that we stay close to family, colleagues and friends who may have been affected by restrictions over many months
  • Making these check-in calls that mean so much
  • Re-engaging in the activities of Rotary Melbourne so that we don’t lose any of the momentum that has been built up by so many over our hundred years.

Melbournians are renowned for their pride, ingenuity, determination and agility. Let’s play our part and work together in rebuilding our wonderful city.

For friendships in Rotary and the opportunity to serve, we give thanks.
