Welcome to our New Member - Sue Smith

Sue was delighted that her son Nick was able to attend her induction

Sue Smith was inducted on 15 December 2021 with the classification of Associations - Management.

Sue was born in Mansfield and educated at St Catherine’s and Taylors Secretarial College, in 1968.

After completing her Secretarial Certificate, Sue worked as a secretary in various companies from advertising agencies to agricultural supplies. She also worked for both the Dept of Defence in Melbourne and Dept of Foreign Affairs in Canberra. In 1980 she moved back to Melbourne and worked in a small engineering company involved in the defence sector. In 2003 Sue became of Executive Officer of the Australian Industry & Defence Network nationally and in Victoria where she remained for thirteen years and was involved in the increasing the membership by 400% nationally.

On retirement in December 2016 Sue didn’t intend to continue consulting in the defence and security sectors however, a number of her previous members contacted her and suggested that she think about providing information about business opportunities for defence related small to medium enterprises (SMEs). In August 2017 Sue established SME Defence and began providing this weekly service to time poor SMEs.

Sue and her husband President Reg have two children, Nick and Jessica. Nick is married to Joe and they have 2 children (a girl 2 & a boy 3 months). They live in Los Angeles where Nick works for a merchant bank and Joe is currently a writer and producer for Emily in Paris.  Sue enjoys gardening, aerobics (when able to get to the gym without catching Covid), walking and attending MTC productions.

Sue is a member of Malvern Group, is the current Bulletin editor and will serve on the Communications and Membership Committees.

Sue has been personally involved in Club activities since 2018, when she assisted with the On-to-Conference program and has come to form many friendships with members of the Club and appreciates the great work that it does. For Sue retirement is an opportunity to give back for the good life she has enjoyed with her family and career.  Sue is looking forward to joining Rotary Melbourne with its amazing diversity of people and the wide variety of interesting projects.
