Vocational Panel Challenged Us To Explore New Horizons

The annual Vocational Panel on 2 February yet again highlighted the rich talents and the diversity of skills of our members. The three panellists this year were:

Dr Chris Sotiropoulos who focused on using technology and global connections to expand educational and employment opportunities in Asia and Africa and in Australia - especially to create meaningful pathways for young adults.

Professor Susan R Davis who provided a sobering analysis of the implications for researchers and for Australia’s future of the competitive environment for accessing dwindling research funds and the consequent wastage and loss of expertise. Susan challenged Rotarians to consider how we might contribute to retaining and growing research talent.

George Giamadakis expanded on the importance of strategic analysis and rethinking of technical skills. In addition underpinning personal skills to harness talent and address skills shortages and thereby transform traditional recruitment strategies e.g. recruiting a hairdresser, with exceptional interpersonal skills, as a motor vehicle sales consultant.

The three panellists challenged us to expand our perceptions and horizons to a different mode of analysis, to creatively change our approach and to create new opportunities.
