Trevor Jensen's aviation experience as a pilot and Senior Executive with many Australian and international airlines has translated into a successful career as an Aviation consultant. His experience and insights enabled him to deliver an entertaining and interesting address on what we can expect in the next decade when we step on to a long haul flight for business or leisure purposes.
Trevor pointed to several logical technical developments that already enable non-stop long haul flights half way around the globe, and the evolution of flight crew requirements, from four down to the current two pilots now. He noted that the airlines are already contemplating pilotless flight with human backup provided by up-skilled cabin crew if needed.
Such developments will have to navigate complex regulatory frameworks across the globe as well as needing public acceptance. The competitiveness of civil aviation creates and enormous incentive to reduce labour costs by making these changes, but will only be feasible when customers are confident in the safety of the technology involved.
