The Health and Ageing Committee held its 17th Seniors’ Lunch on a sunny October day.
It was 9.15 am on Wednesday morning November the 9th when the coach pulled away from the high-rise flats in Crown Street Flemington, on its way to pick up the rest of the Senior Citizens group who were heading off for a much anticipated outing.
Once the folk from Ormond Street Kensington, were aboard the coach set off heading south to the Red Hill Estate where they were to have lunch at Max’s Restaurant.
There were 28, including 2 carers, to supervise these elderly folk ,some of whom needed individual care because of poor vision and walking difficulties. These socially isolated elderly folk live in supported accommodation and have all had a difficult time due to financial problems.
The sun was shining, and the temperature was perfect, a typical spring day in Melbourne. When the coach turned into the Red Hill Estate there was an audible sigh as people had their first vision of the magnificent view over Western Port Bay across to Cowes and the Nobbies with Bass Strait in the distance.
Coffee was served on the terrace and the folk settled into the relaxed feeling as they chattered with each other, renewing old friendships and meeting the representatives of Rotary Melbourne who came down to make sure everything went well.
Lunch was served just after 12 noon. It consisted of a 2 course meal starting with a beautifully cooked oven baked salmon, served with garnishes including bowls of Sebato potato chips followed by a meringue based rich chocolate cake with cream.
At 1pm the folk went out onto the terrace or strolled in the lush gardens on the edge of the large vineyard.
The coach pulled away at 1.30 pm heading to Arthur’s Seat where a stop allowed people to get out and take in the magnificent view across Port Phillip.
The feedback has been superb and all in all it was deemed a very successful event.
