Guest Speaker Charlie Thomas:
Charlie is one of 22 Kiwis selected for the Antarctic Heritage Trust’s Inspiring Explorers Expedition™ – to South Georgia Island.
Charlie works and lives on Waiheke Island as the Monitoring Technician for Te Korowai o Waiheke and has spent the last four and a half years working full time in conservation.
His passion for seabirds and wildlife conservation has led him to islands all over the Hauraki Gulf and even as far as the sub-Antarctic Snares and Auckland Islands.
Charlie will tell us about his trip and the wildlife he has seen.
South Georgia Island is located east of the most southern end of Argentina, and just north of Antarctica. On the map it appears as a tiny dot, measuring about 160 kms long and just 32 kms wide.
Despite its size, this island is home to some of the extensive and most important penguin, seal and seabird breeding areas in the world.
This expedition will honour the centenary year of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s final expedition (Quest 1921–1922) which journeyed to South Georgia and marked the end of the heroic-era of Antarctic exploration.
The Antarctic Heritage Trust is the guardian of Shackleton’s only expedition base in Antarctica. On this expedition, participants will embrace the same spirit of exploration and commemorate 100 years since the death of legendary polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.
