ABOUT THE CONCERT:

Journey through eight centuries of music performed within the iconic Notre-Dame de Paris in a groundbreaking performance that spans Medieval, Baroque, and Contemporary eras.

In the world premiere of this moving theatrical celebration, spoken word penned by Helpmann Award-winning playwright and director Alana Valentine is brought to life by the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and Brandenburg Choir. This musical homage to Our Lady of Paris unfolds with compositions by revered Baroque maestros such as Lully and Rameau, interwoven seamlessly with timeless pieces harking back to the 12th century by luminaries such as Hildegard von Bingen and France's own Pérotin — an enigmatic composer linked to the Notre Dame school of polyphony, shrouded in historical mystery.

A debut production conceptualised by Paul Dyer and directed by Alana Valentine, Notre-Dame weaves a compelling narrative told by highly regarded actors, Glenn Hazeldine and Matilda Ridgway backed by powerful orchestral and choral melodies echoing the cathedral's illustrious history. The genesis of this concert series took root during a fateful encounter between Dyer and Valentine in 2019, who were together when they first heard of news of the fire that would partially consume Notre-Dame de Paris. In 2021, Valentine’s libretto for Notre-Dame received the Australian Writers’ Guild Award for Best Script for a work of Musical Theatre. Three years on, this highly anticipated production finally takes to the stage.

Notre-Dame goes beyond a story of grief and loss. Witness to both revolution and miracles, the cathedral on the Île de la Cité has been an epicentre of musical innovation and choral transcendence since the first stone was laid. Revel in an opportunity to raise our hearts together as we dig through the ashes of memories, affirming hope in the certain resurrection of the cathedral, and indeed the human spirit, to enter a brave new era.
