Jury comment

The Birrarung/Yarra River is the lifeblood of the broader Melbourne region and is at the city’s heart. The Greenline Project masterplan is an ambitious vision for reconnecting the city and the community to its highly valued but complex north bank riverfront. The project has catalysed a shared vision that can support the delivery of reconnected space across many landowner and management layers.

Embracing the values of the Traditional Custodians, the project is grounded in recognising the river as a living entity, with the opportunity for reconnecting people with diverse experiences. The masterplan provides a framework that combines multiple factors to revitalise this essential part of the city. It gives a clear plan that identifies the role that site-wide elements and location-specific renewal will play in enhancing Melbourne’s liveability and contributing to its economic vitality.

The Birrarung, flowing for thousands of years, has seen its north bank dominated by infrastructure, which has severed connections between the city and the river. This ambitious project will deliver a revitalised north bank that will transform the relationship between the city and the river for decades to come.

The Greenline Project is located in Naarm/Melbourne on the land of the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung of the Kulin Nation.
