We were delighted to celebrate Peter Hollingworth's 90th Birthday at last week's meeting at the Sofitel, where he also delivered the Reflection. President Catherine acknowledged his lifetime of service.
Born in Adelaide 90 years ago, Peter Hollingworth grew up in Melbourne and attended Scotch College. At 18, during National Service, he found his calling in the Church. He earned a BA and a Licentiate of Theology from the University of Melbourne and became Deacon, then Priest-in-Charge at St Mary’s, North Melbourne.
Peter dedicated 25 years to the Brotherhood of St Laurence, rising to Executive Director and becoming one of Australia’s leading voices for social justice. His Church leadership continued as Canon of St Paul’s Cathedral, Bishop in the Inner City, and eventually Archbishop of Brisbane, where he championed the ordination of women and fought for the disadvantaged.
Named Australian of the Year in 1992, Peter used the platform to advocate for youth and Indigenous Australians. In 2001, he was appointed Governor-General of Australia.
A Rotary Melbourne member for 28 years, Peter was instrumental in the PACE initiative, a collaboration between Rotary, the Brotherhood, and the State Government. He’s been a dedicated contributor to many Club committees, facilitated introductions and supported the recognition of youth.
For over sixty years you have been a tireless and outspoken campaigner and advocate for Indigenous Australians, the homeless, the unemployed, refugees and the poor in our community. Way back in 1997 you were named an Australian National Living Treasure. We certainly treasure you as a member of this club. Your knowledge and inspiration has been vital to the Club’s efforts to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Peter, your fearless advocacy for social justice was recognised in 1989 by the Rotary Club of Carlton when you were awarded a Paul Harris Fellow and consequently it was our pleasure to recognise your lifelong contribution to making this world a better place with a Paul Harris Fellow Sapphire in 2014.
