Reflection Barbara Yerondais 27 August 2025

What is Community Service?

In a time of Artificial intelligence I’m told

Community service is unpaid work or assistance provided for the benefit of the community, often through volunteering or as a legal requirement. It can involve a wide range of activities, such as volunteering at food banks, cleaning public spaces, or helping vulnerable individuals. This work can be carried out by individuals or groups and may be motivated by a desire to make a difference, meet a school or court requirement, or fulfill a community need.

The core characteristic of community service is that it is performed without financial compensation.

The goal is to improve the well-being of the community or specific groups within it.

Examples include helping at shelters, assisting the elderly, maintaining parks, or supporting environmental initiatives.

    • Motivations for participation are Voluntary: People choose to participate out of a desire to give back or to gain experience.
    • But can be Mandatory: Individuals may be required to perform community service as part of a legal sentence (e.g., for a court) or as a condition of a school program.

Community service can be organized by government bodies, charities, non-profit organizations, or informal groups of citizens.

Did you know that the most common source of community service in Australia, is through our local sporting clubs – sort of makes sense.

So when we have young people making an impact on the lives of other young people through community service, we – as Rotarians like to support these youngsters, as we know they are the community leaders of our future.

So we in this room sit in a privileged position.

We understand the ideals and practice community service, and I would like to urge you all to encourage your networks to do the same.

Thank you Barbara Yerondais for the Reflection on Wednesday 27 August 25.
