A convivial experience awaited 27 Rotary Melbourne Members, guests and visitors at this year’s surprisingly mild, late afternoon and early evening picnic in the park. The very hot prevailing conditions that day were alleviated significantly by the park’s location alongside Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens and reminded those present of the importance of trees in moderating heat-wave conditions in urban environments.
President Catherine Baxter presided, welcoming everyone, especially distinguished visiting Rotarian Ryusuke Yokoyama, President and CEO of the Osaka Exchange attending as guest of Past President, Chris Wang.
President Catherine then took the opportunity also to welcome Robert McGuirk, champion of the Rotary Melbourne Peace Bells project. In expressing the Club’s profound gratitude for his indefatigable efforts, which continue, Catherine presented Robert with a framed plaque that acknowledged Robert’s contribution. Robert responded in his normally humble way thanking many in the Club and beyond for their work and support of this ambitious project. A photograph of the plaque setting out the Four Steps Towards peace is included with this bulletin.
Take note that the Annual Rotary Melbourne Peace Park Picnic is likely to be a part of our meeting schedule in years to come, in mid-February.
