We were saddened to hear of the death last week of our member Dr David Nurse, whose life and service we honour.

Dr David Nurse was inducted into the Rotary Club of Melbourne on the 9th of April, 1975, with the classification of Medicine – Dermatology. Just recently, David celebrated 50 years of Rotary membership - and true to his good humour, was chuffed to receive his 50-year member socks.

David was educated at Glamorgan, Melbourne Grammar, and Gresham School in England, and graduated from the University of Melbourne Medical School in 1954. He became a highly respected and much-admired dermatologist, leading the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s Dermatology Unit from 1976 to 1984, and pioneering patch testing for skin allergies here in Melbourne.

Within our Club, David was known for his no-nonsense, pragmatic approach, his warm welcome, and for being wonderful company at our lunches. He served as a Director from 1991 to 1993, as Vice-President in 1996 to 1997, and contributed his time to many committees, including Chairman of the Fellowship Committee and Student Exchange Committee and Deputy Chairman of the International Committee..

In recognition of his contributions, David was named a Paul Harris Fellow. When his health declined in 2010 and he could no longer attend meetings, the Club was proud to make him an Honorary Member for his outstanding service.

Sadly, David’s beloved wife Doff passed away in December 2023. He is survived by their two sons and their families. A service to celebrate David’s life is expected at the end of May, allowing time for his family to gather in Melbourne.
