Reflection Philip Endersbee 5 November 2025

This year marks the 123rd anniversary for our Australian National Flag. The flag was first raised in 1901 on the spire of the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne.

We now have a day to mark our National Flag which seems to have got lost amongst all the different flags we tend to fly and celebrate for a whole number of reasons that least of all bring our nation and the people of our nation together.

The official Australian National Flag Day was proclaimed in 1996 as a national day and the 3rd of September was chosen as the date.

All Australians are encouraged to fly or display the Australian National Flag to celebrate Australian National Flag Day.

When I reflect on this I do wonder how many,

* Conduct a flag raising ceremony, and whether

* Businesses and organisations which don’t have a flagpole display the Australian National Flag in the public areas of their buildings, such as foyers, and

* Read about the history of the Australian National Flag and the protocols for flying the flag particularly at schools and in the classroom on the day.

So today’s reflection is for all of us to reflect on the significance of a National Flag Day and what we need to be doing to ensure we respect our history and take time to reflect on it.

Thank you to Philip Endersbee.
