Bird boxes Melbourne Aboretum

Next >

Rotary Melbourne partner, the Melbourne Arboretum is excited to have received  21 Bird boxes, made by the Mernda Men's Shed. Theses boxes have been well crafted from weather proof marine ply, with specific native bird's needs given to to the Arboretum by Bird Life Australia.

As many  are aware, the Indian Miner birds are challenging indigenous birds for habitat. Hence these boxes' designs are intended to be Minor proof.

The next task is to place these boxes onto mature trees, 3 to 4 metres high, in The Melbourne Arboretum, in time for the nesting season and then await the birds moving in!

The Arboretum is  aiming to put a livestreaming camera in to enable the public to observe the birds. They anticipate that parrot type birds will be the main occupants, as smaller birds prefer lower under storage in woodlands. Birds are a barometer as to the health of an ecosystem, and  The Melbourne Arboretum works with Bird Life Australia to record numbers and species of birds, as they need actual data to ensure the birds survival. An Arboretum is much more than just trees.  Native grassland, wetlands and native fauna complete the picture.
