Good afternoon, Rotarians & guests present and online today for our “Young Achievers Awards“. These awards have been presented annually by our club since 1992 recognising outstanding young people in our community.
Sadly, we hear every day about the ongoing youth crime in our society and clearly these people need considerable intervention and counselling from government and support agencies.
That being said we continue to be inspired by many young people with passion, vision and drive. Just this morning an 18 year old Melbourne girl – Bianca Adler achieved a remarkable feat completing an expedition reaching the peak of Mount Everest.
Last week another 18 year old student pilot from Melbourne, Rose Donald completed a 40 day, 15,000 km journey flying solo around Australia raising $ 70,000 for charity.
Perhaps we could arrange for these people to be guest speakers at our club later in the year.
Youth Service is the official theme for May in our Rotary District 9800 calendar dedicating time to empowering young people through leadership development, service and educational projects.
Our club continues to support a range of youth projects, programs & awards and I am sure we will be highly impressed with the winners of this year’s Young Achievers Awards.
Thank you Peter Dakin
