When someone is struggling with suicidal thoughts, self-harm, anxiety or depression, family and friends often want to help - but may be afraid of saying the wrong thing.
Rotary Melbourne member and psychiatrist Associate Professor David Horgan has dedicated many years to addressing this challenge. His free resource, WhatDoISay.org, provides more than 500 medically approved messages that family members, friends and colleagues can use to offer regular, practical support when it is needed most.
The approach builds a network of care around someone who is struggling, helping ordinary people find supportive words without requiring specialist knowledge or training. David’s related app, Prevent a Suicide: What to Say, was recognised by Suicide Prevention Australia with its 2024 Life Award for Innovative Practice and Research.
We are delighted that David has now joined the Board of the Rotary Action Group on Mental Health Initiatives as a Director-at-Large. His innovative approach is also being prepared for inclusion among a select group of mental-health toolkits featured by the Action Group, extending its potential reach through Rotary’s international network.
Rotary Melbourne has been proud to encourage and support David’s work. As we mark World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September—and look ahead to Mental Health Month in October—we encourage members and friends to explore the resource and share it through their own networks.
Sometimes, knowing what to say can make an enormous difference.
