My involvement with DIK started sometime after Timor Leste gained its Independence in 2002 when the West Footscray store had started to ship all manner of supplies to Timor, and they sought some assistance in packing containers. That started my long involvement with Donations in Kind of over 20 years and it is impossible to capture in a few paragraphs the multitude of activities and my involvement but more importantly the great service this project delivers.
Every year, about 4,000 deaths occur from cervical cancer. US Rotary member Isabel Scarinci intends to deliver a knockout blow to the preventable disease. Scarinci is a behavioural psychologist and vice chair of the Global and Rural Health Program in the University of Alabama’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Rotary District 9800 Polio Plus Co-ordinator Jane Pennington spoke at our weekly lunch meeting on 20 November 24 to encourage members to join the Polio Plus Society and support Rotary’s mission to eradicate polio worldwide! Members pledge at least US$100 annually to the PolioPlus Fund until polio is eliminated. This is matched 2:1 by the Gates Foundation, so for every US$100 donated, this equates to US$300 which immunises 300 children. Be part of this life-changing initiative and sign up now.

Thanks to Australian Rotary Health funding, ARH Scholar Jason Palazzolo and his Monash University team have developed ‘SCE5-scuPA,’ a clot-busting drug showing impressive results in safely dissolving brain clots. With over 100 Australians facing strokes daily, this groundbreaking research could save lives and improve recovery for thousands.
