AROUND THE BAY: October 8, 2017

With Bicycle Network Victoria contributing $50 for every volunteer and the Club matching this on a dollar for dollar basis we should be able to significantly increase our contribution to the Learning for Life program.  The new volunteer positions are on the routes from the City to Port Melbourne and from Albert Park to Elwood and for this year we have contacted inner city and bayside Rotary Clubs to ask them to join with the Rotary Club of Melbourne in making Rotary a major partner in this significant event.

From a Smith Family perspective, your past involvement has enabled numerous children from disadvantaged family situations to remain in school in their quest for a better education and hopefully more options to enjoying a fulfilling life. We work with The Smith Family to direct our donations to school expenses for children in inner city areas and after school extra support.  Around the Bay combines fun and friendship while helping a great cause.

We would love to enrol you this year as volunteers to act as route marshals and as last year,  ar we are also volunteering in the Sorrento rest area and as two person teams in the SAG (support and gear) operations

One change from last year is that Bicycle Network Victoria has modified their website to allow the club's Around the Bay organisers to sign up Rotary volunteers.  This means that all Rotary members need to do is let myself or Trevor know you are able to help and we can do the work to get you signed up.  This should also allow us be a bit more flexibility in allocating specific locations to folks who have route preferences.

As was the case in prior years the length of time allocated will generally be 4 to 6 hours with a few roles a little longer and with inclusions of rest breaks.  Please see the attached position descriptions for the three different roles. You will be provided with ......

  • Necessary equipment to complete your role
  • A drink bottle and hat that can be kept after the event
  • Insurance cover while completing the role
  • A hi-visibility vest for safety purposes

Once again this year we are seeking involvement of the staff and students from the Youth Foyer at Kangan Institute to join us at the Rotary Club of Melbourne .  Additionally, we are seeking our Corporate Members to once again include this event on their volunteering program.

For you, your friends, your partners and your families all that we need at this stage is:

  1. Provide Jim Orchard, thename of each volunteering person, a phone contact and a return email.
  2. Let Jim know who wants to be in a two person team together and this will be arranged.
  3. We will get you signed on and contact you with your allocated location.

Please notify your commitment as soon as possible or by Friday 19 August at the latest.

Jim Orchard: 0452 639 329 or Trevor Nink on 0404 084 283

Thanks in anticipation
